Currently, the United States produces approximately 14,000 GMLRS missiles each year for use with HIMARS and M270 rocket launchers. Under the new plan, a total of 95,010 missiles will be produced over the next four years.
Manufactured by Lockheed Martin, the 227-mm Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS) missile is fitted with a precision guidance system for high accuracy. It can carry a variety of warheads, including high-explosive and cluster munitions, making it effective against fortified positions, enemy troops, and infrastructure targets.
Each HIMARS launcher is capable of firing up to six GMLRS missiles in a single salvo, providing substantial firepower on the battlefield. This capability has made the system a crucial component of modern artillery forces.
Northrop Grumman has supplied between 5,000 and 6,000 rocket motors annually for the GMLRS over the past four years. The company has invested $1 billion over six years to expand its production capacity across multiple facilities.
In addition to U.S. efforts, Lockheed Martin’s Australian division is planning to produce 4,000 GMLRS missiles annually. These will support HIMARS deployments in the Asia-Pacific region.
