Ukraine and Diehl Defence sign agreement to expand IRIS-T air defence cooperation

By Defence Industry Europe

Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with German defence company Diehl Defence, the manufacturer of the IRIS-T air defence system. The agreement, signed by Ukrainian Defence Minister Rustem Umerov during his visit to Germany, aims to expand industrial cooperation and increase the supply of air defence systems and missiles.

According to the memorandum, the delivery of IRIS-T air defence systems and missiles to Ukraine is expected to triple. The agreement is part of Ukraine’s broader efforts to enhance its air defence capabilities and strengthen cooperation with international defence manufacturers.

The IRIS-T system has played a key role in Ukraine’s air defence strategy, providing interception capabilities against various aerial threats. Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence has reiterated that protecting airspace and civilian areas remains a priority.

This memorandum follows Germany’s previous commitments to supply Ukraine with additional air defence systems. In September 2024, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz confirmed an order of 17 IRIS-T systems for Ukraine, including both medium-range IRIS-T SLM and short-range IRIS-T SLS systems.

By expanding collaboration with Diehl Defence, Ukraine aims to further develop its defence capabilities. The agreement also contributes to integrating Ukraine’s defence industry into broader European security initiatives.
