Ukraine and Sweden discuss Soviet-era aircraft modernisation and potential transfer of Saab platforms

By Defence Industry Europe

Ukrainian Deputy Minister of Defence for Aviation Development Oleksandr Kozenko Oleksandr Kozenko met with representatives of Swedish aerospace firm Saab to explore avenues for strengthening the capabilities of the Ukrainian Air Force. The discussions focused on both upgrading Ukraine’s Soviet-era aircraft and the possible transfer of modern Saab -produced platforms.

A central topic was the integration of advanced Swedish avionics into existing Ukrainian aircraft, including modern radars, defensive systems, and electronic warfare countermeasures. The potential for collaboration between Ukrainian and Swedish defence industries was also considered as part of this upgrade initiative.

“Ukrainian-Swedish cooperation in this area will be mutually beneficial, as Ukraine will enhance the capabilities of its aircraft, while Sweden will gain insights from the combat experience gained through their deployment,” said Oleksandr Kozenko. This mutual benefit underscores the strategic value of deeper cooperation between the two nations’ defence sectors.

The parties also reviewed current agreements and examined next steps in the event of a favourable political decision on the transfer of Swedish aviation platforms to Ukraine. Discussions included the potential support and integration of these platforms into Ukrainian service.

Both sides committed to maintaining active dialogue to implement the agreements reached and to explore further collaboration. Continued consultations are expected as both countries seek to strengthen their partnership in air defence capabilities.
