Ukraine launches serial production of Peklo drone-missiles, delivering first batch to armed forces

By Defence Industry Europe

Ukraine has officially started serial production of the "Peklo" drone-missiles, described domestically as strike unmanned aerial vehicles. The first batch of these advanced weapons was handed over to the Armed Forces of Ukraine in a ceremony attended by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces General Oleksandr Syrskyi, Defence Minister Rustem Umerov, Minister of Strategic Industries Herman Smetanin, and other senior officials.

For security reasons, the exact number of missiles delivered was not disclosed. However, images from the event suggest the batch consists of at least a dozen units. Ukrainian officials confirmed that “Peklo” missiles have already been successfully deployed in combat conditions five times, demonstrating their operational effectiveness.

The exact specifications of the missiles remain classified, but Ukrainian statements highlight that they can reach a range of over 700 km and achieve speeds of 700 km/h, powered by jet engines. Comparisons have been drawn to certain Russian cruise missile and drone models, with the “Peklo” reportedly offering similar capabilities at a significantly lower cost. Details about their launch method have not been made public.

Herman Smetanin emphasised the strategic importance of the new system. “This is a new type of weapon, developed from scratch by Ukrainian manufacturers within a record timeframe of one year. It reflects the ingenuity and determination of our defence industry,” he said. The system is undergoing continuous improvement to enhance its resistance to electronic warfare, reliability, and precision, while new warhead variants are being developed to expand its range of potential targets.

The use of domestically produced weaponry, independent of foreign supply chains, marks a significant milestone for Ukraine. It allows the country to strike critical Russian military and infrastructure targets more effectively. “It is crucial that our defenders receive such modern weapons of Ukrainian origin. The next step is scaling up production and deployment,”  Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated.
