The United Kingdom’s F-35 fleet is set to declare full operational capability during its most significant airpower deployment of the century. Operation Highmast, led by HMS Prince of Wales, began last month and features two F-35B squadrons from both the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force operating together for the first time.

“Operation Highmast marks a pivotal milestone for the Lightning program,” said Group Captain Butcher, commander of the Lightning Air Wing. “We are on track to achieve full operational capability for F-35 in the UK, with the ability to deploy two squadrons to the maritime operating base.”

The UK’s F-35s, which have already “proven their mettle in operational settings,” will now be capable of sustained operations from both land and sea. This milestone will significantly enhance the UK’s rapid response capabilities worldwide.

“The capability that the fifth Gen aircraft brings is just incredible, absolutely eye-watering,” said Royal Navy Capt. Colin McGannity, Air Wing Commander of the UK Carrier Strike Group. The F-35s’ performance in joint maritime operations highlights their advanced capabilities in complex environments.

“Partnering with other F-35 nations, especially our NATO allies, significantly extends our reach and potency around the world,” added Lt. Col. Carty, commander of 617 Squadron. These partnerships ensure greater interoperability and global presence for UK forces.

Beyond its military value, the F-35 programme is contributing to the UK’s economic strength. It supports more than 20,000 jobs across the country, fostering innovation and developing defence skills across all regions.
