Ultra Maritime secures major sonobuoy contract for French defence operations

By Defence Industry Europe

Ultra Maritime has announced a significant multi-product contract from Thales Group in support of France’s Direction Générale de l’Armement (DGA), the national defence procurement agency. The agreement includes the delivery of both active and passive sonobuoys featuring next-generation technologies to enhance anti-submarine warfare (ASW) capabilities.

As modern submarine and uncrewed threats become increasingly stealthy, advanced sonobuoy performance is vital for effective undersea threat detection. Ultra Maritime now offers fully qualified, high-volume production sonobuoys from facilities in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, developed after several years of focused investment and innovation.

Through this contract, Ultra Maritime will provide the French Navy (Marine nationale), via Thales, with improved ASW capabilities and greater detection probability of underwater threats. The deal reflects growing demand for robust undersea domain awareness solutions in an evolving maritime security environment.

The supply will include newly designed, U.S.-manufactured AN/SSQ 62E DICASS and AN/SSQ 53G DIFAR sonobuoys. These models incorporate advanced battery technology that nearly doubles the operational life of active sonobuoys while enhancing acoustic performance and ensuring accurate detection, localisation, and classification.

Ultra Maritime will also deliver G-size AN/SSQ 536G Bathythermal buoys from its Canadian facility in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. These compact buoys are specifically suited for deployment by rotary-wing aircraft and Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAVs), where size and weight constraints are key operational considerations.
