Germany has requested up to 400 AIM-120D-3 AMRAAM missiles, 12 guidance sections with precision positioning, and one integrated test vehicle, along with telemetry kits, control sections, containers, encryption devices, spare parts, and training. The package also includes technical documentation, software support, engineering and logistics services, and other programme support elements.
The AIM-120D-3 AMRAAM has an estimated range of over 160 kilometres, with some sources listing up to 180 km, and features enhanced resistance to electronic warfare. Its improvements are achieved through updated software and better flight path control rather than changes to propulsion.
According to the State Department, “This proposed sale will support the foreign policy goals and national security objectives of the United States by improving the security of a NATO Ally that is a force for political stability and economic progress in Europe.”
The Department added, “The proposed sale will improve Germany’s capability to meet current and future threats by providing increased air-to-air capability for the German F-35 program and supporting German and shared NATO planning, training, and operational requirements.” It further confirmed that the sale will not alter the basic military balance in the region.
The principal contractor for the proposed deal will be RTX Corporation. The Department noted that Germany will have no difficulty integrating the systems into its armed forces.
