In 2022, Poland signed a major contract with the U.S. government for 250 Abrams tanks, along with a comprehensive package that includes ammunition and additional support vehicles.
The initial delivery comprises 28 Abrams tanks, which were transported aboard the MV Cape Texas, arriving in Gdynia on January 17, 2025.
The contract, signed in April 2022, outlines the procurement of 250 state-of-the-art M1A2 SEPv3 Abrams tanks produced by American defense contractor General Dynamics Land Systems (GDLS). It also includes 26 M88A2 recovery vehicles and 17 M1074 Joint Assault Bridge (JAV) tactical bridge systems. The Ministry of National Defence of Poland has announced that all 250 tanks are scheduled to be delivered by 2026.
In addition to the 250 new M1A2 SEPv3 tanks, Poland has also purchased 116 refurbished M1A1FEP Abrams tanks. Deliveries of these second-hand tanks were completed in 2024. Once the full complement of M1A2 SEPv3 tanks is delivered, the Polish land forces will operate a total of 366 Abrams family main battle tanks.
