The new contract is valued at $84.2 million and is fully funded at the time of signing. The majority of the financing comes from the United States Air Force budget, with deliveries scheduled for completion by the end of July 2028.
This amendment follows an earlier contract signed in December 2024, which saw an undisclosed number of bombs procured for $282.4 million. Estimates suggest that the December order covered approximately 1,000 units, designated for both the Air Force and naval aviation.
The latest contract extension could involve the acquisition of around 360 additional StormBreaker bombs. This move reflects the increasing reliance on the weapon for enhancing operational capabilities across multiple platforms.
The GBU-53/B StormBreaker is a precision-guided munition equipped with a multi-mode targeting system. It is designed for use against both stationary and moving targets, ensuring high accuracy and effectiveness.
Weighing just 93 kg, the bomb is relatively light, allowing fighter aircraft to carry multiple units in a single mission. This capability enhances operational efficiency by enabling pilots to engage multiple targets while minimising collateral damage.
RTX has already delivered several thousand StormBreaker bombs to the Department of Defense, including a limited batch to its first export customer, Australia. The weapon is set to become a key component of the air-to-surface arsenal for various multi-role combat aircraft.
Aircraft platforms integrating the StormBreaker include the Boeing F-15E Strike Eagle, F-15EX Eagle II, and F/A-18E/F Super Hornet. Lockheed Martin’s F-16C/D Fighting Falcon, F-22A Raptor, and F-35 Lightning II will also be equipped with the munition.
