US Space Force and Italian Air Force sign agreement to enhance space security cooperation

The United States Space Force (USSF) and the Italian Air Force have taken a significant step toward strengthening their space security collaboration. On May 8, General Chance Saltzman, Chief of Space Operations for the USSF, and Lieutenant General Luca Goretti, Chief of Staff of the Italian Air Force, signed a statement of understanding in Rome.

The signing occurred during the 2025 Aerospace Power Conference, highlighting the shared commitment of both nations to safeguard the space domain. This agreement underscores the importance of space as a strategic area crucial to deterrence and defence.

General Saltzman emphasised the importance of cooperation, stating, “The signing of this statement of understanding marks an important step forward in our collective effort to protect the space domain.” He added that the collaboration would strengthen interoperability between the two air forces.

Lieutenant General Goretti echoed this sentiment, noting the significance of enhancing skills and working together. “In an increasingly strategic context of space, this agreement represents an opportunity to consolidate our expertise and contribute to collective security,” he said.

The document also builds on existing ties between the two nations under the Military Personnel Exchange Program. It opens the door for sending a team of USSF experts to Italy and reciprocally allows highly qualified Italian Air Force personnel to be integrated within the US Space Force.
