Viper Shield is a state-of-the-art electronic warfare (EW) suite that enhances both offensive and defensive operations for F-16 platforms. It remains the only fully funded EW solution for the F-16, setting it apart from other options on the market.
The system’s standout feature is its seamless compatibility with multiple F-16 configurations, including Block 70/72, Block 40, and Block 50 aircraft. Notably, it can be installed in D-models without any structural redesigns.
Earlier F-16 blocks can also be equipped with Viper Shield through a podded system, which uses the same Line Replaceable Units (LRUs) as internal installations. This ensures consistent protection across all configurations while simplifying maintenance and sustainment.
This broad adaptability places Viper Shield three to five years ahead of competing systems. It guarantees that partner nations receive cutting-edge capabilities without delay or compromise.
Development of the system is fully funded, supported by six partner nations, with more expected to join in 2025. “This strong financial support and the substantial number of orders underscore the confidence and trust placed in Viper Shield’s capabilities,” said Ed Zoiss, President, Space and Airborne Systems, L3Harris.
Flight testing of the Viper Shield production hardware began in January 2025, using a single-seat Block 70 F-16 aircraft. Environmental testing is also underway in an anechoic chamber to validate the system’s performance under diverse conditions.
Meanwhile, spiral software development continues to support future system enhancements while hardware production proceeds in parallel. This approach allows customers to benefit from upgrades without delaying hardware availability.
The Viper Shield system has been in production for nearly a year, with L3Harris scaling its operations to meet increasing demand. The company plans to deliver the first production units in 2025 and reach full production capacity by mid-2026 for the 168 systems currently under contract.
This schedule highlights L3Harris’ commitment to delivering advanced electronic warfare capabilities on time, ensuring operational readiness for the global F-16 fleet.
