WASS wins Indian Navy contract to supply Black Shark Advanced torpedoes for Scorpène submarines

Fincantieri, through its subsidiary WASS Submarine Systems, has secured a contract from the Indian Navy to supply Black Shark Advanced heavyweight torpedoes. Valued at over EUR 200 million, the agreement is the largest in WASS’s history and will equip the six Scorpène-class submarines in service with the Indian fleet.

Fincantieri, through its subsidiary WASS Submarine Systems, has secured a contract from the Indian Navy to supply Black Shark Advanced heavyweight torpedoes. Valued at over EUR 200 million, the agreement is the largest in WASS’s history and will equip the six Scorpène-class submarines in service with the Indian fleet.

 

Deliveries are scheduled to take place between 2028 and 2030, with production carried out at WASS’s facility in Livorno. The site is described by the company as a centre of excellence for underwater systems.

 

 

The Black Shark Advanced torpedo is already in service with the Italian Navy and the navies of six other countries, underlining its international use. The contract also includes launch systems for the submarines, maintenance equipment and spare parts to provide integrated support for the Indian Navy.

Commenting on the agreement, Pierroberto Folgiero, Chief Executive Officer and General Manager of Fincantieri, said: “This agreement marks a key strategic step for Fincantieri in India, a market of central importance in our long-term international growth strategy and one of the most dynamic naval hubs globally.” He added: “We are proud to deepen our cooperation with the Indian Navy and to position Fincantieri as a trusted long-term partner in this strategic geography.”
