XTEND Defense secures USD 8.8 million contract for AI-driven tactical drone systems

By Defence Industry Europe

XTEND, a leading innovator in AI-powered tactical drone solutions, has been awarded an USD 8.8 million contract by the U.S. Department of Defense’s Irregular Warfare Technical Support Directorate (IWTSD). The contract will see XTEND deliver its Precision Strike Indoor & Outdoor (PSIO) small Unmanned Aerial Systems (sUAS) to enhance the operational capabilities of U.S. defence forces.

The PSIO sUAS represents a significant technological advancement, being the first U.S. DoD-approved loitering munition platform capable of operating in both indoor and outdoor environments. These AI-driven drones offer real-time, high-precision strike capabilities with minimal human intervention, providing strategic advantages in urban and open-field operations while minimising risks.

This contract award follows the successful completion of extensive live-fire tests and safety evaluations. The drones, which meet National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) requirements, will be produced entirely in the United States, with initial deliveries scheduled to commence in the first quarter of 2025.

“We are honoured to strengthen our partnership with IWTSD,” said Aviv Shapira, Founder and CEO of XTEND. “The live-fire tests demonstrated the precision, reliability, and operational superiority of our Scorpio PSIO sUAS solution. This contract validates our technology’s ability to address the complex challenges faced by modern defence forces.”
