Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Wednesday that at least eight Russian drones were directed towards Poland during a major overnight assault. The attack, involving hundreds of drones and missiles, marked a significant escalation, he said.

“Today there was another step of escalation – Russian-Iranian ‘shaheds’ operated in the airspace of Poland, in NATO airspace,” Zelenskyy wrote on X. He stressed that “it was not just one ‘shahed’ that could be called an accident, but at least eight strike drones aimed toward Poland.”

Zelenskyy said a total of around 415 drones and more than 40 missiles were launched against Ukraine overnight, hitting 15 regions. One person was killed in Zhytomyr region and three were injured in Khmelnytskyi region as a result of the strikes.

Ukraine’s air force reported that 386 of 415 drones and 27 of 43 missiles were destroyed. Despite this, 16 missiles and 21 drones hit targets across 17 locations.

Regional officials said civilian industrial sites were damaged in Vinnytsia, while emergency services in Volyn put out a fire spanning 1,000 square metres. The scale of the damage highlighted the intensity of the attacks.

In response, foreign minister Andrii Sybiha reiterated Kyiv’s appeal for greater regional support in defending its skies. “Ukraine has suggested such step for a long time. It needs to be taken for the sake of collective security,” he wrote on X.
