The primary objective of the HIMARS maintenance centre is to reduce the operational costs and downtime associated with maintaining these advanced artillery systems. Prior to the establishment of this centre, maintenance had to be performed abroad, leading to higher costs and extended service times. The new facility will allow for quicker repairs and lower costs, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of the Romanian military.
In addition to its strategic benefits, the centre is expected to have a substantial economic impact on the local community in Bacău. It is projected to create approximately 2,000 jobs, ranging from skilled technicians and engineers to support staff, thus providing a significant boost to the local economy.
The HIMARS maintenance centre in Bacău is not only a critical asset for Romania but also serves the broader NATO alliance. The facility is equipped to service HIMARS systems from neighboring countries, including Ukraine.
The strategic importance of the centre was highlighted by Romania’s Defence Minister Angel Tîlvăr, who emphasized its role in strengthening NATO’s collective defence posture. Ray Piselli, Vice President of Lockheed Martin, also underscored the significance of this partnership, highlighting Lockheed Martin’s commitment to supporting Romania’s defence infrastructure.
Romania’s acquisition of the HIMARS systems began with a contract signed in August 2018. The first units were delivered in February 2021, marking the beginning of a new era in Romania’s defence strategy.
The collaboration between Aerostar and Lockheed Martin extends beyond HIMARS maintenance. The two companies have previously partnered on maintaining Romania’s fleets of Black Hawk helicopters and F-16 fighter jets. This ongoing relationship provides Aerostar with valuable technical expertise and positions it within Lockheed Martin’s global supply chain, opening up opportunities for future partnerships and technological advancements.
