The United States Department of Defense has announced the award of a USD 282.3 million fixed-price-incentive-fee contract to Raytheon for the production of the 11th lot of GBU-53/B StormBreaker bombs. This contract, disclosed on 19 December, provides for the manufacturing of complete munitions, known as all-up rounds, as well as their containers. The work will be conducted in Tucson and is expected to conclude by 19 March 2029.

RTX Corporation, Raytheon’s parent company, has already delivered over 3,000 GBU-53/B StormBreaker bombs to the U.S. Department of Defense. A small batch was also supplied to Australia, the system’s first export customer. The StormBreaker is intended to become a core air-to-ground weapon for a wide range of multi-role combat aircraft, including the Boeing F-15E Strike Eagle, F-15EX Eagle II, F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, and Lockheed Martin’s F-16C/D Fighting Falcon, F-22A Raptor, and F-35 Lightning II.

Equipped with a sophisticated multi-mode guidance system, the StormBreaker is capable of targeting both stationary and moving objects. Its lightweight design of 93 kilograms enables fighter aircraft to carry a higher number of munitions, enhancing their ability to strike multiple targets while minimising collateral damage. The contract also covers the provision of storage containers, ensuring readiness and logistical support for operational deployments.
