The first batch arrived in Vietnam during the last quarter of 2023, while the second batch marked the full implementation of the contract signed in February 2021. The L-39 Skyfox will be used for training fighter jet pilots, serving as an intermediate stage between the turboprop Beechcraft T-6C Texan II and advanced training aircraft such as the Yak-130.
There is speculation that this acquisition could be a step towards the procurement of Western fighter jets. Reports suggest that Vietnam has shown interest in purchasing Lockheed Martin F-16C/D Fighting Falcon aircraft, though no official confirmation has been made.
The L-39 Skyfox is a modernised variant of the L-39 Albatros, which first flew in 1968. It features an upgraded airframe, removing the traditional wingtip fuel tanks in favour of internal wing tanks, along with advanced avionics from Genesys Aerosystems and a Williams FJ44-4M engine with 16.89 kN of thrust.
The aircraft is capable of advanced training missions, including weapons training with up to 1,200 kg of ordnance. This includes precision-guided munitions mounted on five hardpoints—one under the fuselage and four under the wings.
So far, Aero Vodochody has secured orders for 34 next-generation L-39 aircraft for customers across Europe, Africa, Asia, and North America. However, Czech media reports suggest that this relatively small order volume could drive up unit costs, potentially affecting the aircraft’s competitiveness in the market.
