General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) has signed a collaboration agreement with South Korea’s Hanwha Aerospace to jointly develop and produce Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) for global defence markets. The agreement builds on a successful 2024 demonstration in which a GA-ASI MQ-1C Gray Eagle STOL (short takeoff and landing) drone was launched from the South Korean Navy’s amphibious vessel ROKS Dokdo while underway near Pohang.

The demonstration highlighted the aircraft’s ability to operate from various ship types without requiring catapults or arresting gear, offering new deployment options for U.S. and allied forces. It also marked a significant step towards deeper industrial cooperation between the two companies in both Korea and the United States.

“We’re excited to extend and deepen our business relationship with Hanwha,” said GA-ASI CEO Linden Blue, who oversaw the November 2024 trial. “Our test flight with Gray Eagle STOL was well-received by the Republic of Korea Navy, and we know Hanwha is ready to invest to grow a UAS business with GA-ASI both in Korea and the U.S.”

Hanwha Aerospace will invest over 300 billion KRW (approximately USD $203.5 million) into development and production capabilities for the GE STOL platform, including expanding research, building facilities, and sourcing domestic components. The investment is expected to generate nearly 10,000 jobs over the next decade globally, including at least 500 new positions in the U.S.

“Hanwha Aerospace views unmanned systems as a strategic pillar for the future of defence,” said Dong Kwan Kim, Vice Chairman of Hanwha Group. “Through our collaboration with GA-ASI, we aim to strengthen sovereign defence capabilities, expand Korea’s presence in the global UAS market, and contribute to a more robust ROK-U.S. alliance.”

The Gray Eagle STOL, previously known as Mojave, shares components with the existing Gray Eagle 25M, allowing for cost-effective development and lower technical risks. Its ability to launch from ships and rugged terrain offers a versatile solution for modern combat scenarios, with a payload and endurance suited for multi-domain operations.

The aircraft has already achieved several operational milestones, including landings on the HMS Prince of Wales, live-fire tests in Arizona, and shipboard launch-and-recovery exercises. This latest agreement positions GA-ASI and Hanwha to jointly pursue new opportunities in the rapidly evolving unmanned aviation sector.
