Airbus has signed a contract with the German procurement agency BAAINBw to equip 23 A400M aircraft of the German Air Force with Directed Infrared Counter Measures (DIRCM). The system is designed to protect the aircraft from missiles with infrared seekers.

The agreement includes not only the installation of the DIRCM systems but also the provision of related services such as training, service bulletins and tools. The contract marks a significant upgrade in the defensive capabilities of the Luftwaffe’s A400M fleet.

“Transporting troops, equipment and humanitarian supplies; refuelling other aircraft and helicopters in the air; serving as a flying hospital for the treatment of wounded personnel – the Airbus A400M is the face and workhorse of the German Air Force,” said Gerd Weber, Head of the A400M programme at Airbus Defence and Space. “The new DIRCM system will provide A400M crews with even greater protection during their missions around the world and expand the already broad range of applications for this exceptional aircraft.”

Airbus will carry out the installation of the DIRCM systems, supplied by Elbit Systems, during scheduled maintenance at its sites in Manching, Germany, as well as in Getafe and Seville, Spain. The 23 aircraft receiving the upgrade are primarily used in tactical operations, including medical evacuation in crisis regions.

In contrast, A400Ms configured for logistical missions are used for tasks such as long-range transport of personnel, heavy armoured vehicles, helicopters, or specialised engineering equipment. These differing roles underline the versatility of the A400M platform within the German Air Force.

Currently, Airbus is testing the DIRCM system on a German A400M at its facility in Seville, Spain. Certification is expected by summer 2025, with installation on all 23 aircraft scheduled to be completed by 2032.
