Saab has announced its participation in the MARTE (Main ARmoured Tank of Europe) project, a major European defence initiative aimed at strengthening the continent’s technological independence. The project is led by MARTE ARGE, a joint venture between KNDS Deutschland GmbH & Co.KG and Rheinmetall Landsysteme GmbH.

A total of 51 organisations from 11 EU Member States, along with Norway, are collaborating on this effort to design a future Main Battle Tank (MBT) system. Saab is part of the core team responsible for managing one of the five technical Work Packages within the project.

The MARTE project focuses on study and design activities intended to meet the harmonised needs of participating European nations. It places strong emphasis on integrating innovative and disruptive technologies to ensure the system is equipped to face evolving military challenges.

“The MARTE project is an important step towards a future European Main Battle Tank,” said Görgen Johansson, Head of Saab’s business area Dynamics. “As a trusted partner in defence, we are proud to be part of this initiative and to contribute with our knowledge and experience.”

The project officially commenced on 1 December 2024, following a successful Kick-Off Meeting in Stockholm on 5 and 6 December 2024. It has secured approximately €20 million in funding from the European Defence Fund (EDF).

Support for the project comes from the Ministries of Defence of 11 countries: Germany, Belgium, Spain, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Romania, and Sweden. This joint backing highlights the strategic significance of the MARTE project in advancing Europe’s defence capabilities.
