Vyoma has been awarded two contracts by the European Defence Fund (EDF) programme of the European Commission.

In the frame of the European Defence FUND (EDF), Naval Group Belgium, a 100% subsidiary of Naval Group, will lead the E=MCM project for a period of three years. Following the work carried out as part of the MIRICLE project*, which was concluded successfully at the end of 2023, 21 European partners will work together in the consortium to reach a European sovereign capacity in the future mine warfare.

Six research and development projects in which Navantia has a role will be funded by the 2023 European Defence Fund (EDF) call, according to the selection announced by the European Commission.

The European Commission signed the Grant Agreement for the launch of the STORE (Shared daTabase for Optronics image Recognition and Evaluation) collaborative research project, coordinated by Thales and funded by the EDF (European Defence Fund). Bringing together a consortium of 20 partners (manufacturers, SMEs and academics) from 8 EU Member States and Norway, this project aims to build a shared image database secured by most advanced technology and to develop and evaluate artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms dedicated to data analysis of ground platform imaging systems. This project will contribute to the automatic management and tactical analysis of information in land combat situations, thanks to technological innovation in deep learning of optronic data.

Airbus will coordinate four defence R&D projects following the successful signature of the grant agreement between the European Commission and the consortia.

Multinational technology company GMV has kicked off the CONVOY (ClOud iNtelligent explosiVe detectiOn sYstem) project, an initiative selected for funding by the European Union with an estimated budget of €4,986,989.50. Multinational technology company GMV has kicked off the CONVOY (ClOud iNtelligent explosiVe detectiOn sYstem) project, an initiative selected for funding by the European Union.

The EU emphasises that the war in Ukraine highlighted the key role of space-based connectivity in the conduct of military operations (Clapp & Evroux, 2023). In the case of the war in Ukraine, the use of satellites for observation and transmission of information proved crucial. Russia launched cyberattacks to weaken space-based assets used by Ukraine, while an hour before the invasion a multi-faceted attack was launched against the private satellite provider Viasat’s KA-SAT network, which provides high-speed satellite internet coverage for Europe. The attack intended to weaken Ukraine's command and control capabilities. Ukraine's military capabilities are also boosted by Starlink, which gives artillery forces information that soldiers upload via encrypted chat.

The EUROGUARD project, funded by the European Defence Fund (EDF), has officially commenced in Estonia. With an investment of almost EUR 100 million, the project involves a collaboration between 23 enterprises and the cooperation of 10 EU Member States. The consortium is under the leadership of the Estonian shipbuilding company Baltic Workboats. The primary objective of this initiative is to develop a modular and semi-autonomous surface vessel platform equipped with a remote control system, aiming to strengthen sea defense capabilities across Europe. The kick-off involved workshops in Tallinn and a shipyard visit to Nasva, Saaremaa.

The European Commission has entrusted the OCCAR the management of the EDF 2022 project EU Naval Collaborative Surveillance Operational Standard project (E-NACSOS).

EU defence industry, SMEs and research entities submitteda record high number of proposals at yesterday’s call closure. 236 proposals will compete for funding worth €1.2 billion for collaborative EU defence R&D projects. This is the largest number of proposals received since the establishment of the Fund in 2021 and constitutes an overall 76% increase in comparison with the last year.
