GENIUS is one of eight strategic projects awarded to GMV under the European Defence Fund’s latest tenders. Funded by the European Commission, the initiative seeks to enhance safety and efficiency in military operations through innovative technology.
Traditional explosive detection methods are often insufficient, putting personnel at significant risk. GENIUS will introduce a high-tech approach integrating advanced sensors, unmanned platforms, and artificial intelligence to improve precision and reliability.
GMV is responsible for designing the C2 command and control system, which will integrate unmanned systems, sensors, effectors, and infantry equipment. The company will also develop the architecture, technical requirements, and interfaces to ensure system interoperability.
The project officially began with a meeting in December 2024, followed by a workshop on 28–29 January 2025 at GMV’s facilities. During the sessions, participants discussed the project roadmap, technical hurdles, and ethical compliance measures, marking the beginning of this ambitious initiative.
Over the next three years, the GENIUS consortium will develop solutions to improve explosive threat detection in high-risk environments. The project also aims to create more reliable and adaptable threat management systems while reducing false alarms to enhance operational confidence.
The consortium comprises 18 organisations from seven European Union member states, fostering cross-sector collaboration. Partners include Airbus Defence and Space GmbH (Germany), Aalborg University (Denmark), Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Solid State Physics (Germany), and the Royal Military Academy (Belgium), among others.
GMV’s role in GENIUS is part of its broader involvement in European defence innovation. The company was selected for eight European Defence Fund projects, including NG-MIMA for military avionics, FIRES 2 for precision artillery munitions, and SEACURE for maritime infrastructure protection.
