HENSOLDT completes AI-based image evaluation campaign as part of European defence project

By Defence Industry Europe

German defence technology firm HENSOLDT has completed its second measurement campaign under the European research and development project STORE (Shared Database for Optronics Image Recognition and Evaluation). The campaign, held in Kongsberg, Norway, aimed to collect data for developing artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms in image evaluation.

Eight members of the STORE consortium participated in the campaign, which involved recording the signatures of land and air vehicles in snowy operational conditions. HENSOLDT deployed a technology demonstrator vehicle equipped with multiple sensor systems, including the SETAS 360° vision system and long-range reconnaissance cameras.

The collected data will now be analysed and used to build a common European database for testing and training AI algorithms. This follows the initial measurement campaign conducted last year in Fontevraud, France, which laid the foundation for the project’s database.

“The insights gained in the study pave the way for the development of modern algorithms for the analysis of sensor data, which support soldiers in complex operational environments in making decisions based on a broad range of information,” said Christina Canitz, Head of Division Optronics at HENSOLDT. “Sensor solutions that enable the perception of the environment from the safety of the interior are an essential component of land vehicles today. With the help of modern algorithms, objects in image data, for example, can be automatically detected and classified.”

STORE is a collaborative project involving 21 partners from eight EU countries and Norway. It is supported by €23 million in funding from the European Defence Fund, with a focus on advancing AI-based image evaluation and developing a shared test and training database.
