Switzerland to proceed with F-35 and Patriot air defence system purchase despite U.S. tariffs

Switzerland has reaffirmed its ability to operate the F-35A fighter jet independently, countering claims of external control or restrictions linked to US defence systems. The Swiss Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS) clarified that the aircraft, alongside the Patriot missile defence system, can function autonomously without requiring US approval.

Switzerland will go ahead with its planned purchase of F-35 fighter jets and the Patriot missile defence system from the United States, despite the recent imposition of 39% tariffs on Swiss imports by Washington. Swiss President Karin Keller-Sutter confirmed the government’s commitment to the deal on Thursday.

“The Federal Council has repeatedly affirmed that it is sticking with the F-35. If we didn’t do that, we would have no air defence,” Keller-Sutter told Reuters.

The decision highlights Switzerland’s focus on national security amid rising trade tensions between the two countries. The Swiss government has chosen to prioritise defence needs over economic retaliation in response to the U.S. tariffs.
