Belgian crews have undergone extensive instruction overseas, with six Remote Pilots, six Sensor Operators and six Mission Intelligence Coordinators completing a first training phase in the US by June. “They have learned the functioning of the Ground Control Station (GCS), the Mission Intelligence Station (MIS), emergency procedures, as well as the operational functioning and limitations of each system on board the aircraft,” the Armed Forces confirmed.
As part of this phase, Belgian personnel also conducted nine-hour flights in California, successfully operating the SkyGuardian in practice. The second phase of tactical training will continue in the United Kingdom, further preparing the teams for operational deployment.
The MQ-9B underwent an Acceptance Test Procedure (ATP) in the United States on 22 July, where it was assessed against Belgian operational requirements. “During this crucial test phase, the aircraft, the Ground Control Station, the Remote Operations Network (RONET) and the portable pre- and post-flight equipment were thoroughly evaluated in terms of performance, safety and compliance,” the Armed Forces noted.
Following the successful evaluation, the system was disassembled and transported by A400M aircraft to Belgium in early August. The reassembly and installation in Florennes will be completed within weeks, with further testing scheduled ahead of its official presentation on 23 September.
