AeroVironment to modernize Dutch fleet of Puma UAS under new contract

By Defence Industry Europe

American drone manufacturer AeroVironment, Inc. has announced a new contract with the Dutch Ministry of Defence (MoD) to modernize the Netherlands’ Puma Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) fleet. The agreement aims to enhance the capabilities of the Puma 3 AE UAS, providing increased situational awareness and operational effectiveness.

The modernization initiative will equip the Puma 3 AE UAS fleet with advanced features that support mission-critical operations, even in GPS-denied and contested environments. Key upgrades include improved survivability, enhanced communication systems, and the option for vertical take-off and landing (VTOL), significantly boosting operational flexibility.

Deliveries of the upgraded Puma 3 AE systems are already underway, with rapid deployment expected at the squad and platoon levels. The Netherlands is also expanding its UAS capabilities by acquiring the Puma LE, which offers extended endurance and range for diverse tactical and civilian missions.

Both the Puma 3 AE and Puma LE are designed to deliver scalable Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities, supporting agile operations. The systems have been battle-tested in challenging environments, including recent deployments in Ukraine, earning a reputation for reliability and adaptability.

Highlighting the importance of the partnership, Trace Stevenson, AV’s president of Autonomous Systems, stated: “Our expanded partnership with the Dutch MoD underscores the rising demand for adaptable, mission-ready uncrewed systems across NATO. AV’s battle-proven Puma platforms are built to deliver real-time intelligence and unmatched battlefield agility—so our partners can make faster, smarter decisions in the world’s most contested environments.”

Puma UAS systems are specifically designed for expeditionary operations, capable of being launched by a single soldier or from Fennek reconnaissance vehicles. These advancements form part of a broader initiative by the Dutch Ministry of Defence to modernize and scale uncrewed capabilities throughout its forces.

The continuous updates to the Puma platforms reflect AeroVironment’s commitment to keeping their systems mission-ready. With real-world experience informing ongoing development, the Puma UAS remains at the forefront of modern battlefield technology.
