Airbus Defence and Space and Indra Group have been selected by the Spanish Ministry of Defence to conduct a conceptual definition study for a future Signals Intelligence aircraft for the Spanish Air and Space Force. The study will last 18 months and will focus on identifying the most suitable platform and signals intelligence systems for a national solution based on three aircraft.

The future system is intended to detect, track, classify, and identify targets of interest to the Spanish Armed Forces. Airbus Defence and Space will develop a proposal for an aircraft adapted to Spanish operational requirements, while working with Indra to study the integration of electronic and communications intelligence systems as a preliminary step towards programme definition.

At a later stage, Airbus is expected to carry out the required modifications to the selected aircraft to implement and industrialise the signals intelligence system proposed by Indra. The company brings extensive experience in converting commercial aircraft into military platforms, including the A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport, as well as in integrating sensors and mission systems across different aircraft configurations.
