The enhancement comes through a newly developed data interface connecting SYNAPSIS to the Gigabit Ethernet DataMultiplex System. GEDMS is the navigation information distribution network used on ships equipped with the AEGIS Combat System.
The capability was developed as part of the Royal Australian Navy’s Warship Integrated Navigation and Bridge System programme. The work was carried out in 2025 for the Hunter-class frigates.
SYNAPSIS integrates data from a wide range of navigation and mission sensors to support safe navigation and ship control. With the new interface, the platform can now exchange navigation data and receive sensor status information from AEGIS-approved sensors.
According to Anschütz, the interface provides a secure pathway for distributing consistent and validated navigation data across ship systems. This strengthens interoperability on naval platforms equipped with AEGIS-related technologies.
To enable the new capability, the company developed a dedicated software module within SYNAPSIS. The module harmonises data formats and establishes defined bidirectional data exchange with the GEDMS network.
As part of the update, the SYNAPSIS Conning application has also been enhanced. The system can now display the status and selection of AEGIS-approved navigation sensors directly on the system status page.
The company says this feature supports improved ship control and faster operator awareness. It also helps crews monitor system performance more clearly during operations.
The integration of the GEDMS interface further expands the modular and scalable architecture of the SYNAPSIS system. For naval shipbuilders and operators, the solution provides a pre-validated engineering approach designed to reduce technical and programme risk.
According to Anschütz, the system simplifies integration between navigation platforms and AEGIS-related systems. It also improves consistency in the navigation data shared with combat systems across naval fleets.
The AEGIS Combat System, developed by Lockheed Martin, is used by the United States Navy and several allied navies worldwide. The system provides integrated air and missile defence capabilities on modern warships.
SYNAPSIS serves as Anschütz’s modular integrated navigation and bridge system. The platform is currently used on major naval programmes, including the Royal Australian Navy’s Hunter-class frigates, the German Navy’s F125 and K130 classes, and the United Kingdom’s Type 26 and Type 31 frigates.
The system is also installed on a range of government and commercial vessels. According to the company, more than 1,200 ships worldwide operate with integrated systems supplied by Anschütz.
With the addition of the GEDMS interface, the SYNAPSIS WINBS architecture is expected to further strengthen its interoperability capabilities. The company said the system is designed to meet evolving requirements of modern naval operations.
