The upgrade was carried out under the BARBAROS-Class Frigates Mid-Life Upgrade (BARBAROS-MLU) Project, initiated by the Turkish Presidency of Defence Industries. The programme is aimed at enhancing the combat readiness and operational effectiveness of the BARBAROS-Class frigates, key assets of the Turkish Naval Forces.
ASELSAN served as the main contractor for the project, delivering a tailored combat system integration that reflects the specific requirements of the Turkish Navy. New capabilities installed include radar, electronic warfare, integrated combat and satellite communication systems, as well as electro-optic, weapon control, underwater and navigation support technologies.
Beyond the system upgrades, ASELSAN also executed significant structural redesign work on the TCG ORUÇREİS. This included modifications to the main mast, reorganisation of components both above and below deck, and in-depth assessments of stability, power distribution, HVAC systems, and electromagnetic compatibility.
Speaking on the achievement, ASELSAN President and CEO Ahmet Akyol said: “We are proud to complete the world’s most comprehensive MEKO-class frigate modernization by renewing the 21 systems on TCG ORUÇREİS with our advanced naval solutions.” He added: “Drawing on this extensive experience, ASELSAN is capable of addressing the needs of all navies, with its innovative and effective naval systems gaining worldwide recognition. We will continue to provide the most advanced systems to our Navy and the navies of allied countries.”
