ATMOS and ARX Robotics forge alliance to bolster European space defence capabilities

By Defence Industry Europe

ATMOS Space Cargo (ATMOS) and ARX Robotics (ARX) have announced a strategic partnership to create the world’s first Orbit-to-Ground Deployment Platform. The newly formed Space Defence Alliance aims to enhance Europe’s logistical capabilities through integrated space defence technology, addressing both civil and military needs.

This collaboration will merge ATMOS’s orbital re-entry systems with ARX’s autonomous unmanned systems (UxS), forming a robust European platform for rapid and targeted intervention. “This newly formed Space Defence Alliance with ARX Robotics underscores our commitment to strengthening European resilience and autonomy,” said Sebastian Klaus, CEO of ATMOS Space Cargo. “By integrating orbital capabilities with advanced robotics, we are equipping Europe with unprecedented rapid-response infrastructure.”

ATMOS recently launched its first orbital capsule, PHOENIX 1, which successfully completed a re-entry mission in April 2025. The next-generation capsule, PHOENIX 2, is scheduled for launch in 2026, marking a significant advancement in scalable and autonomous return logistics. The alliance will leverage these orbital capabilities to support rapid-response scenarios, including disaster relief, reconnaissance missions, and defence operations.

By joining forces, ATMOS and ARX Robotics will combine orbital re-entry logistics with modular unmanned ground systems, establishing a network of innovative dual-use technologies. Marc Wietfeld, CEO of ARX Robotics, stated: “Forming this alliance and developing this groundbreaking platform with ATMOS allows us to store and deploy autonomous unmanned technologies from orbit rapidly and flexibly. This significantly expands European military-strategic capabilities and operational possibilities for NATO forces.”

The integration of ATMOS’s PHOENIX capsules with ARX’s Mithra OS will facilitate the deployment and coordination of unmanned ground, sea, and air assets. This modular and flexible architecture will enable Europe to maintain operational autonomy even when traditional connectivity is compromised.

ARX Robotics has recently expanded its presence in the UK, collaborating with the British Army and the Ministry of Defence, and has announced plans to establish new headquarters and production facilities. The company, having secured €31 million in Series A funding, continues to strengthen its European partnerships.

The Space Defence Alliance has also garnered support from J14 European Resilience, an investor network focused on DefenceTech innovation. This backing highlights the commitment of both companies to fortify Europe’s operational readiness amid growing geopolitical challenges.
