The Wedgetail’s long-range reconnaissance capability enabled continuous monitoring of Eastern Europe, helping NATO protect key supply corridors into Ukraine. The mission, conducted under Operation Kudu, showcased Australia’s ability to integrate into NATO and operate alongside European partners.
The aircraft also played a deterrent role by reducing the risk of attacks on logistical hubs located outside Ukrainian territory. This effort formed part of a wider multi-layered protection strategy for the aid delivery network.
The Australian Government has reaffirmed its continued support for Ukraine in resisting Russia’s invasion, with over $1.5 billion in military and humanitarian assistance committed to date. Additional support will follow, including the delivery of the final tranche of M1A1 Abrams tanks and ongoing training of Ukrainian troops by Australian Army personnel in the United Kingdom.
Vice Admiral Justin Jones, Chief of Joint Operations, commended the Australian personnel involved in the mission. “Our people deployed under Operation Kudu have made an outstanding contribution to supporting Ukraine,” he said.
“During the deployment, the E-7A Wedgetail was able to conduct operations and deliver valuable intelligence while seamlessly integrating with our NATO partners,” he added. “The ADF stands ready to continue our support to Ukraine, under Operation Kudu.”
