France declares intent to procure GlobalEye early warning and control aircraft from Saab

By Defence Industry Europe

France has announced its intention to procure GlobalEye, the advanced airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft developed by Swedish defence company Saab. The declaration was made through a joint statement signed by Saab and the French defence procurement agency, Direction générale de l’armement (DGA), at the Paris Air Show.

Under the agreement, France plans to purchase two GlobalEye aircraft, including associated ground equipment, training, and support. The declaration also includes an option for the DGA to acquire two additional aircraft.

A formal notification process will now follow to finalise the procurement. According to the DGA, a contract is expected to be concluded in the coming months.

As of now, Saab has not received an official order from France, and a binding contract has not yet been signed. The joint declaration represents a significant step towards finalising the deal.

“We welcome today’s announcement by France about the intention to procure GlobalEye, which will enhance the French Armed Forces’ situational awareness and threat detection across the air, land and sea domains,” said Micael Johansson, President and CEO of Saab. “Our solution will enable France to maintain full sovereign control of its airborne early warning and control capability.”

GlobalEye is a state-of-the-art multi-domain AEW&C system equipped with a combination of active and passive sensors. It offers long-range detection and identification of objects in the air, at sea, and over land.

By delivering real-time information to air forces, armies, and navies, the system significantly improves situational awareness and facilitates early threat detection. This capability is critical for enhancing national security and operational readiness.
