The GDAMS system is set to be produced in Devonport, Plymouth, marking the first UK-manufactured 120mm mortar in decades. This development is expected to generate significant local benefits, including the creation of up to 70 skilled jobs and the upskilling of the existing workforce. The production will also support the UK supply chain, particularly in the South West region.
If selected for the UK’s indirect fires programme, GDAMS will enhance the British Army’s close indirect fire capabilities while aligning with the UK’s Land Industrial Strategy. Tom Newman, Chief Executive of Babcock’s Land sector, highlighted the system’s potential to increase the army’s firepower while offering affordability and availability.
ST Engineering’s Brigadier General (Ret) Jin Kiat Chua praised the collaboration, noting the combined expertise of both companies in delivering a solution that meets the UK’s defence needs.
The production facility, located in the South Devon Freeport Zone, could also open future export opportunities, benefiting allied nations with improved import terms.
