The upgrades will convert the systems to the Mk 45 Mod 4 configuration, incorporating a 62-calibre barrel and reinforced gun mount. Additionally, a digital control system will allow seamless integration of targeting and fire control data, significantly enhancing performance.
These enhancements will enable the use of modernised munitions with 50% greater firing energy. The system will also support future precision-guided munitions, enabling unprecedented range capabilities for the U.S. Navy.
“Recent events in the Red Sea highlight the critical need for advanced naval firepower,” said Brent Butcher, vice president of Weapon Systems at BAE Systems. “With the Mk 45 Mod 4, sailors gain enhanced protection and cutting-edge capabilities.”
Upgrading existing systems offers a cost-effective solution compared to developing entirely new platforms. The modifications provide sailors with modern long-range strike and air defence capabilities, ensuring readiness for current and future threats.
The contract work will be carried out at BAE Systems’ facility in Louisville, Kentucky. Completion is expected by the end of 2028, marking another step in modernising the U.S. Navy’s fleet.
