Installed on the INS Sa’ar 6 missile ship, the ‘Barak Magen’ system demonstrated its ability to counter various aerial threats, including UAVs, cruise missiles, and shore-to-sea projectiles. Since the beginning of the operation, the Israeli Navy has intercepted approximately 25 UAVs posing threats to Israeli civilians.
The missile ships of Flotilla 3 remain deployed across all operational theatres, working in coordination with the Israeli Air Force. The Israeli Navy described this cooperation as a “force multiplier in the mission of defending the skies of Israel.”
Developed by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), the Barak MX system features an open system architecture and modular design. It integrates sensors, battle management, and multiple interceptors into a unified and network-centric solution.
Unlike repurposed air-to-air missiles, Barak MX interceptors are specifically designed as surface-to-air weapons, offering superior performance with a range of up to 150 kilometres. The system includes the Barak ER (150km), Barak LR (70km), Barak MR (35km), and Barak SR (15km), all sharing core components for operational flexibility.
According to IAI, “The Barak MX system provides a comprehensive defense solution against a wide range of aerial threats, including aircraft, missiles—such as cruise missiles—sea-to-sea missiles, rockets, and ballistic missiles.” The system is currently in service with multiple international customers.
All interceptions are conducted using an advanced radar, a command and control centre, and versatile launchers capable of deploying the full interceptor family. “Over the past week,” IAI confirmed, “the system has successfully intercepted threats by the Israeli Navy and Air Force.”
IAI, the system’s prime contractor, manufactures all components domestically and supports IDF operations. “We would like to take this opportunity to thank the dedicated BARAK MX team for their ongoing support to the IDF,” IAI stated, adding appreciation for the “high level of professionalism” of the system’s operators.
