BlackSky secures multimillion-dollar contract with new international defence customer

By Defence Industry Europe

BlackSky Technology Inc. a U.S.-based space intelligence company, has won a competitive, multimillion-dollar contract from a new international defence customer. The agreement includes immediate access to Gen-3 and Gen-2 subscription-based imagery and analytics services, along with upgrades to the customer’s ground segment infrastructure.

Under the contract, the customer will receive Assured services, which guarantee dedicated tasking capacity for persistent monitoring of specific areas of interest. BlackSky will also modernise the customer’s ground station and mission operations centre with direct-downlink and uplink capabilities to enable faster, locally controlled intelligence.

“This contract illustrates how BlackSky’s reliable fully integrated real-time, commercial space-based intelligence services can be used as an important tool for modern defence and intelligence organisations engaged across the full spectrum of grey-zone conflicts worldwide,” said Brian O’Toole, BlackSky CEO. “BlackSky’s end-to-end automated architecture uniquely gives our most demanding customers the ability to task and receive high-cadence imagery and AI-enabled analytics starting on day one.”

The customer will utilise BlackSky’s automated Spectra® AI-enabled tasking and analytics platform to detect, identify, and classify objects such as vehicles, aircraft, and vessels without human intervention. This capability integrates data from both Gen-3 and Gen-2 satellites to provide real-time situational awareness.

“Our international allied customers continue to lead as early adopters, constantly developing novel applications for AI-enabled change-based monitoring,” said O’Toole. “For this contract BlackSky will also be optimising the ground segment, making the customer’s overall sovereign architecture forward-compatible with the high processing volumes associated with low-latency, high-cadence space-based monitoring.”

The Gen-3 satellite capabilities enhance the existing Gen-2 architecture, supporting ongoing innovation and rapid deployment of new technologies. BlackSky’s vertically integrated model—from satellite design and manufacturing to software development and constellation operations—allows it to deliver scalable intelligence solutions efficiently and cost-effectively.
