The PSC program is a critical component of America’s strategic maritime capabilities, particularly in the increasingly competitive Arctic regions. The new heavy polar icebreaker will be the first of its kind built by the United States in nearly fifty years, aiming to enhance operational capacity in polar areas.
Speaking on the development, Ben Bordelon, President and CEO of Bollinger Shipyards, said: “Today’s announcement is a historic achievement not only for Bollinger Shipyards but also for American shipbuilding. Securing the green light for full production underscores the confidence the U.S. Government places in Bollinger to deliver the nation’s first heavy polar icebreaker in nearly fifty years.”
Since the acquisition of the Singaporean-owned VT Halter in November 2022, Bollinger has made significant investments in its Mississippi facilities. The shipbuilder has invested more than $76 million and has seen its workforce grow by over 61%, with production roles at Bollinger Mississippi Shipbuilding increasing by more than 178%.
Bollinger Shipyards has also introduced its Bootcamp workforce development programs, aiming to cultivate the next generation of skilled American workers. “Our investment in developing the next generation of skilled American workers not only strengthens our competitive edge in the shipbuilding industry but also underscores our commitment to fostering economic growth and American innovation,” Bordelon noted.
The Polar Security Cutter will play a vital role in safeguarding U.S. national security, economic stability, and maritime interests in polar regions. The completion of the first PSC is expected by May 2030, setting a new benchmark in American maritime capability.
