Breton: Germany has a pivotal role to play in boosting EU ammunition production

By Defence Industry Europe

On May 4, European Commissioner for Internal Market Thierry Breton visited German defence company Rheinmetall to discuss the company’s commitment to the plan to ramp up the production of artillery ammunition in Europe to support Ukraine and replenish the military stocks of the European Union members.

German Rheinmetall is the biggest producer of artillery ammunition in Europe.  Currently, the company is producing up to 450,000 artillery rounds per year.

“Germany recently demonstrated a notable shift for strengthening defence efforts and supporting Ukraine. Germany has a pivotal role to play in boosting EU ammunition production —notably through valuable partnerships”, Commissioner Thierry Breton wrote on social media.

During the visit, Rheinmetall underlined its intention to support the European Union’s plan to the best of its ability. The EU’s plan is to supply Armed Forces of Ukraine with 1 million artillery projectiles within 12 months.

“We are grateful for Commissioner Breton’s visit and support to our industry. We at Rheinmetall are more than ever ready to serve the security of Europe with our products and to advance the European partnership in the defence sector. We will continue the massive expansion of capacities that has already begun in order to be able to support the countries of Europe in the best possible way,” said Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger.
