The German Armed Forces have again placed an order with Rheinmetall for 30mm ammunition for the Puma infantry fighting vehicle, extending a framework contract concluded in December 2022. The new order, which forms part of this extended agreement, is valued at several hundred million euros.

The framework contract covers the supply of 30mm x 173 ammunition for the Puma IFV and runs until 2029, with its scope now expanded in terms of delivery quantities and overall order volume. It provides for the delivery of several hundred thousand cartridges worth around €1 billion, while a medium six-figure quantity of ammunition has already been retrieved, and the latest order intake amounts to several hundred million euros.

The order comes as the Bundeswehr strengthens its Puma fleet, having recently commissioned joint venture partners Rheinmetall and KNDS Deutschland to supply 200 additional infantry fighting vehicles. The Puma is fitted with Rheinmetall’s MK30-2/ABM machine gun, which combines a high rate of fire with programmable ammunition technology and has an effective range of more than 2,000 metres against land, air and sea targets.

Rheinmetall supplies two types of combat ammunition for the Puma, KE-TF DM21 and KE DM33 in 30mm x 173 calibre, both developed and certified to the latest standards. The order underlines Rheinmetall’s position as a leading supplier of medium-calibre ammunition and reflects efforts by the German Armed Forces to replenish stocks and expand ammunition reserves in response to the current security situation.
