Canada advances next-generation A330MRTT tanker programme

By Defence Industry Europe

The Canadian Department of National Defence has announced progress in its programme to enhance multi-role transport and air-to-air refuelling capabilities. In February, Canada received its fifth and final second-hand A330-200 aircraft, locally designated as the CC-330 Husky.

All five aircraft are currently operational in transport and passenger roles. Meanwhile, the first brand-new A330 for Canada is undergoing final assembly at Airbus’ facility in Toulouse, France.

As part of the next phase, the five used aircraft and four new ones will be sent to Getafe, Spain, for conversion into the A330MRTT (Multi Role Tanker Transport) configuration. According to the project timeline, the first fully converted CC-330 Husky is expected to arrive in Canada in 2027.

Initial operational capability for the fleet is planned by the end of 2029, with full capability targeted for 2033. The first two second-hand A330s were purchased in June 2022 for USD 102 million, while three additional aircraft were acquired in July 2023 for USD 150 million.

In July 2023, Canada also signed a contract with Airbus to purchase four brand-new A330 aircraft and convert all nine into the MRTT variant. The Airbus A330MRTT continues to expand its global presence, securing contracts in markets traditionally dominated by the United States, such as South Korea, Singapore, and the Middle East.
