Czech Army completed tests of Leopard 2A4 main battle tank

By Defence Industry Europe

The Armed Forces of the Czech Republic have completed series of trials of Leopard 2A4 main battle tank received from Germany under the Ringtausch programme. According to the Czech Army, the tests results are positive and this means that Leopard 2A4 can be introduced into service.

According to the Armed Forces of the Czech Republic, military trials of Leopard 2A4 tank included 16 specialistic tests. The aim of the Czech Army was to check whether Leopard 2A4 met its requirements.

Leopard 2A4 passed all tests with positive results. This is a green light for the introduction of tank into service in the Armed Forces of the Czech Republic.

However, in the conclusions of the tests Czech Army recommends making one technical modification to Leopard 2A4.

The Armed Forces of the Czech Republic intend to equip the turret of the tank with fire protection devices. Originally, the Leopard 2A4 tank is equipped with an automatic fire extinguisher in the engine compartment. Czech Army decided to install it in the turret to improve safety of the tankers. This technical modification will be implemented in cooperation with Germany.

In December 2022, the Armed Forces of the Czech Republic received the first of 14 Leopard 2A4 tanks from Germany. According to the Czech defence ministry, the remaining 13 tanks will be delivered by the end of 2023.

Tanks are supplied by the German company Rheinmetall as part of the German government’s “Ringtauch” equipment exchange programme.

According to a statement published on social media, the Czech Republic intends to buy Leopard 2A7 main battle tanks in the future.

“The Leopard 2A4s will prepare us for the most modern Leopard in the 2A7 version”, the Armed Forces of the Czech Republic said in a post on social media.
