Denmark donates satellite communication services to Ukraine through European Defence Agency

Denmark has decided to donate satellite services to the Ukrainian armed forces through the European Defence Agency (EDA). The donation is a response to Ukraine's urgent need for secure and stable satellite-based communication in its war against Russia.

This marks the first time Denmark contributes European-produced satellite services to Ukraine via the EU framework. The move is a further step in Denmark’s ongoing support for Ukraine’s defence efforts.

“I am proud that Denmark is contributing to Ukraine’s space-based defence with this donation,” said Minister of Defence Troels Lund Poulsen. “Space is a domain that increasingly demands defence policy attention,” he added.

He continued: “In close cooperation with the EU’s Defence Agency, Denmark has now helped strengthen Ukraine’s satellite-based communication in their defence against Russia. There is great potential in space-based solutions, which can contribute to both Ukrainian, Danish and European defence.”

The donation includes technical solutions that improve Ukraine’s access to reliable satellite communication. Satellite systems today play a critical role in modern defence operations.

As part of the package, Ukraine will receive receiving terminals enabling their forces to establish satellite-based communication. This will significantly enhance Ukraine’s ability to continue its fight for freedom against the unlawful Russian invasion.

The terminals will ensure a robust and secure connection, which may prove crucial for conducting military operations. The solution provided by Denmark was directly requested by Ukraine.

The EDA expects other EU member states to follow suit and consider similar donations. This contribution also supports both Ukraine’s and Europe’s strategic technological autonomy in the space domain.
