Denmark plans long-range strike capability to strengthen deterrence and future defence

By Defence Industry Europe

The Danish Ministry of Defence has announced plans to acquire long-range strike capabilities as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s armed forces. The initiative aims to secure precise long-range systems that will enhance Denmark’s deterrence potential.

The decision follows recommendations from the Chief of Defence and is based on lessons drawn from the war in Ukraine. The conflict highlighted the importance not only of integrated, multi-layered air defence but also of having offensive capabilities to counter threats before they are launched.

Minister of Defence Troels Lund Poulsen stated: “Jesteśmy w trakcie procesu odbudowy sił zbrojny. […] Wraz z naziemną obroną powietrzną, Dania wzmacnia swoją zdolność do konfrontacji z zagrożeniami z powietrza, ale również do aktywnego zwalczania zagrożeń z dala od naszego kraju. Wraz z najnowszą decyzją, siły zbrojne wypracują rozwiązanie, jak najlepiej kupować i integrować uzbrojenie dalekiego zasięgu w kraju.”

Currently, Denmark’s armed forces have limited strike capabilities, with the PULS rocket systems representing the longest-range weapon at up to 300 kilometres. Authorities will now conduct a market analysis to identify long-range armaments that best meet national defence requirements, though no official specifications have yet been outlined.

It remains unclear whether future systems will be intended for land, air or naval forces, or what type of effectors and performance parameters will be sought. Speculation suggests that Denmark may evaluate the Ukrainian FP-3 Flamingo cruise missile with a range of around 3,000 kilometres.

In connection with this, Denmark has recently announced plans to begin domestic production of solid fuel for such missiles in Skrydstrup, in partnership with the Ukrainian company Fire Point. To accelerate construction of the facility, more than 20 laws and regulations relating to risk management, public safety and environmental protection have been temporarily suspended.
