Denmark purchases spare barrels for Leopard 2 tanks and ATMOS artillery systems to increase combat readiness

By Defence Industry Europe

The Danish Ministry of Defence has announced the purchase of spare gun barrels for tanks, artillery, and mortars in a move to bolster combat readiness. The decision follows lessons learned from Ukraine’s war with Russia, where intense use of weaponry has led to barrel wear and reduced operational effectiveness.

Spare barrels will be acquired for Denmark’s Leopard 2 tanks, ATMOS artillery systems, and CARDOM mortar systems. These additions aim to maintain weapon accuracy and long-term combat performance in case of prolonged deployment.

“Ukrainians are gaining hard-earned experience in their war against Russia,” said Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen. “Our close cooperation allows Denmark to benefit from their insights, and I’m pleased that we can once again deliver improvements that strengthen our defence capabilities.”

The acquisition is based on recommendations from the Chief of Defence and will be phased in over the coming years. Approximately DKK 230 million will be spent on the spare barrels, funded through Denmark’s Accelerations Fund.

“Intense combat in Ukraine has shown the importance of operational endurance,” stated Army Chief Major General Peter Boysen. “That endurance relies on robust stocks of critical spare parts—barrels wear out over time, and without spares, we risk losing operational effect.”

The investment is part of a wider initiative to accelerate Denmark’s defence capabilities. Under the current agreement, DKK 50 billion has been allocated to the Armed Forces, with DKK 25 billion set aside for both 2025 and 2026.

An additional DKK 10 billion annually has also been earmarked for the period from 2027 to 2033. These funds will support future needs arising from the Accelerations Fund, including new acquisitions, personnel, and infrastructure.
