DGA delivers 10th A330 MRTT aircraft to French Air and Space Force

By Defence Industry Europe

The French Directorate General of Armament (DGA) has recently received and delivered the 10th A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) aircraft, named Phénix, to the French Air and Space Force on May 17, 2023.

Following a series of verification operations conducted since early April, the DGA successfully completed the reception process. The tests took place in Getafe, Spain, where the civilian A330 aircraft produced by Airbus in Toulouse were transformed into MRTT configuration, and later in Istres, France, where the MRTT underwent testing at DGA Flight Testing.

The A330 MRTT Phénix is a versatile aircraft derived from the Airbus A330 commercial airliner. Its wide range of capabilities allows it to replace several distinct fleets of older generation aircraft, including the C135-FR and KC135-RG for air-to-air refueling, as well as the A310 and A340 for strategic personnel and cargo transport.

The Phénix is designed to fulfill various missions entrusted to the French Air and Space Force, including the airborne component of nuclear deterrence, contribution to permanent air security posture, strategic projection of forces and power, and medical emergency transport.

A total of twelve A330 MRTT Phénix aircraft will be delivered to the French Air and Space Force by the end of 2023.
