Diamondback: L3Harris details its new unmanned ground vehicle

L3Harris has unveiled its latest innovation in battlefield technology: the Diamondback, an autonomous ground vehicle designed to redefine U.S. Army reconnaissance and security (R&S) operations. This prototype, developed with Overland AI, was showcased at the Association of the United States Army's annual meeting held from October 14-16 in Washington, D.C.

 

Modern ground warfare has become increasingly complex, with adversaries using advanced technologies and unconventional tactics. L3Harris aims to address these evolving challenges by introducing the Diamondback, which promises to enhance mission adaptability, extend operational coverage, and increase soldier safety in high-risk environments.

“Diamondback showcases L3Harris’ enduring commitment to proactively address our customers’ future challenges,” stated Ed Zoiss, President of Space and Airborne Systems at L3Harris. “We are confident that Diamondback will revolutionize tactical reconnaissance with its intelligent design, scalability, and cost-efficiency, enhancing soldier safety and providing a strategic advantage.”

The Diamondback vehicle boasts a scalable, modular design that can be rapidly customised to suit specific missions. It incorporates readily available commercial components, streamlining maintenance and upgrades while keeping costs manageable. This flexibility ensures that the system remains adaptable to new technologies as they are developed.

Built on Overland AI’s robust off-road base, the Diamondback can traverse challenging terrains encountered in the field, enhancing its utility in varied operational environments. This feature underscores L3Harris’ dedication to delivering practical, high-performance solutions that meet the real-world demands of warfighters.

L3Harris’ collaboration with Overland AI exemplifies the company’s role as a ‘Trusted Disruptor’ within the defence industry. This partnership was facilitated by L3Harris’ strategic alliance with venture capital firm Shield Capital, showcasing the company’s commitment to combining agile innovation with proven expertise to develop rapid solutions for complex government programs.
