Dutch F-35s armed with AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles conduct drone intercept training over the Baltic Sea

By Defence Industry Europe

Two Dutch F-35 fighter jets conducted a training exercise over the Baltic Sea, successfully engaging multiple target drones using AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles. The controlled exercise was organised by the Netherlands and Estonia to enhance operational readiness in counter-drone missions.

Estonia provided the drones for the training, allowing Dutch pilots to practise tactics for intercepting and neutralising multiple aerial threats simultaneously. Such exercises are essential for improving response capabilities against unmanned systems, which are increasingly used in modern conflicts.

Counter-drone operations are a key component of the Netherlands’ F-35 mission within NATO. Live training scenarios help pilots develop skills necessary for real-world engagements, ensuring preparedness for evolving security challenges.

The significance of this training was underscored by recent events in Poland, where Dutch F-35s assisted in securing airspace following a large-scale Russian missile and drone attack on Ukraine. These operations demonstrate the growing importance of drone defence in maintaining regional security.

Since late 2023, the Royal Netherlands Air Force has deployed four F-35s to Estonia as part of NATO’s air policing mission. The Dutch jets have conducted 10 interception missions to date, identifying 18 Russian aircraft near NATO airspace.
