EDGE, the UAE defence group, has completed its purchase of a controlling stake in Italian engine maker CMD S.r.l. and is already in talks over large-volume orders of engines for its unmanned aerial systems. The group said supplying those systems is an immediate priority for the newly acquired business.

The transaction was signed in Rome, following an agreement struck in May 2026 at CMD’s plant in Atella, in the southern Italian region of Basilicata. It gives EDGE direct access to more than 35 years of piston engine manufacturing experience and is a significant move in the group’s expansion in Europe.

EDGE intends to invest heavily in CMD, expanding its manufacturing capacity and speeding up research and development. The money will also go towards strengthening the company’s position in both conventional and next-generation propulsion systems, as demand rises across the engine market.

“Completing this acquisition takes us from agreement to delivery in building a highly capable European propulsion hub that complements and reinforces our global industrial footprint,” said Hamad Al Marar, EDGE’s Managing Director and CEO. “CMD brings proven expertise in piston engines and advanced propulsion technologies, and our role is to help it grow, investing in its people, facilities and technology so it can meet the demand we see across unmanned, maritime and automotive markets,” he said.

“Together, we will accelerate the development of competitive, export-ready products for our customers,” Al Marar added. EDGE is also looking at how CMD’s high-performance engines could be used at sea, in discussions with its naval shipbuilding arm Abu Dhabi Ship Building (ADSB) and other partners.

CMD will keep working with its automotive partners and plans to grow that part of its business. The company designs, prototypes and develops advanced propulsion systems for automotive, marine and aeronautical use.

Mariano Negri, CMD Group’s Chief Executive Officer, said the deal was an important moment for the company and the area around it. “This partnership marks a significant milestone for our region, our facilities and, above all, our people,” he said.

“By combining CMD’s engineering expertise with EDGE’s industrial strength, we are well positioned to increase production capacity, scale our operations and accelerate growth across all business segments,” Negri said. “The partnership also enables us to further enhance our capabilities and deliver high-value technologies to customers on a truly global scale.”

CMD’s existing shareholders keep a significant minority stake and will remain in key management roles. The two sides will now draw up an integration plan together, with the aim of getting the most out of the combination while protecting critical know-how.

The deal adds to EDGE’s activities in advanced engineering, Industry 4.0 and power solutions, and follows the approach the group set out when it launched EDGE Europe in Paris in June 2026. EDGE says it builds in Europe, hires European staff and develops technology on European soil, working alongside established companies to strengthen national industrial bases instead of competing with them.

During a visit to CMD in June 2026, EDGE also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Basilicata Region. The agreement covers industrial cooperation, knowledge exchange and talent development in the region where CMD is based.

CMD was founded by the Negri family in 1989 and is known internationally for technical precision, innovation and strict quality standards, particularly in precision engine components and powertrain technology. It now sits within EDGE’s expanding network of European companies, joint ventures and strategic partnerships, which the group describes as a manufacturing base built to deliver capability at speed and scale to customers around the world.
