Elbit Systems has announced the award of a contract valued at approximately $260 million from Airbus Defence and Space to supply its J-MUSIC Directed Infrared Counter Measures (DIRCM) systems. The systems will be installed on the German Air Force’s A400M transport aircraft as part of a long-term enhancement programme.

The contract will be carried out over a six-year period and follows a procurement decision by Germany’s Federal Office for Equipment, Information Technology and Operations of the Bundeswehr (BAAINBw). Elbit Systems’ J-MUSIC DIRCM is designed to defend aircraft against infrared-guided missile threats, particularly those launched from man-portable air-defence systems (MANPADS).

The J-MUSIC™ system is part of Elbit’s MUSIC family and integrates advanced laser technology with high-performance imaging systems. It autonomously detects, tracks, and disrupts incoming missile threats in real time, requiring no intervention from the aircraft crew.

Its modular and scalable design allows for seamless integration with various aircraft platforms and missile warning systems. The compact form factor of the DIRCM ensures minimal impact on aircraft performance and payload.

Elbit Systems’ DIRCM technology has been deployed on military and commercial aircraft across multiple countries, including Israel, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, and Brazil. It has also been adopted by several major aircraft manufacturers as their preferred solution for both new builds and retrofit programmes.

“This contract further strengthens Elbit Systems’ position as a leading global provider of DIRCM solutions,” said Bezhalel (Butzi) Machlis, President and CEO of Elbit Systems. “Our systems are already trusted by numerous air forces and defence organisations around the world, and we are proud to support Germany in enhancing the protection of their strategic air assets.”

Machlis added: “Our successful collaboration with Airbus DS on this important programme is highly valued, and we are pleased that our advanced self-protection systems will contribute to the safety and operational readiness of the German A400M fleet.”
