elbit systems completes first sigma ng 155mm howitzer built in the us as production shifts locally

Elbit Systems has completed production of the first model of the Sigma NG 155 millimetre self-propelled howitzer at the South Carolina facility of its US subsidiary, Elbit America. The system is fully based on US production, reflecting an effort to expand domestic sales and align operations with the policy preference of US President Donald Trump to rely on American manufacturing.

The Sigma NG combines automation, crew protection and mobility and is designed for next-generation warfare, with the ability to fire all standard 155 millimetre artillery shells. According to reports by the Shephard website, some US-made gun barrel components were sent to Israel for Elbit personnel to apply their expertise before being returned for integration into the remotely controlled turret.

Sigma NG’s capabilities could support Elbit’s relevance to a Pentagon call issued in September for artillery systems.

Sigma is typically mounted on an Oshkosh Corporation 10×10 truck, with the US version incorporating components sourced from the local market. The move is seen as a possible precursor to further localisation efforts in the US, both by Elbit and by other Israeli defence companies.
